Buying guide

How much does a new kitchen cost in Scotland?

Honest price bands from a family joinery that has been designing, supplying and fitting kitchens across Scotland since 1983 - plus the six things that actually move the number.

There is no single answer, but there are reliable ranges. The figures below reflect what real projects cost across Edinburgh, Glasgow, Fife, the Lothians and the Borders, and they include the parts many quotes leave out.

Every band assumes a full design, a survey before ordering and a 5-year guarantee on our installations.

Typical price bands

£10,000 - £20,000

Smaller German kitchen, supply only

A compact to mid-size Impuls kitchen from a lower price group, supplied with laminate worktops and entry appliances. Installation not included.

£20,000 - £35,000

Mid-size German kitchen, fully fitted

A typical family kitchen in a mid price group, fully installed, with a quartz or compact worktop and a mainstream appliance package.

£35,000 - £55,000

Larger German kitchen or entry bespoke

An island layout in a higher price group, or the start of our hand-built bespoke range, with sintered stone worktops and integrated appliances.

£55,000 - £80,000+

Bespoke handmade kitchen

Fully hand-built cabinetry made to measure in our Edinburgh joinery, with matching furniture, larders and boot rooms, premium stone and specified appliances.

These are indicative guide prices, not quotes. The only accurate number comes from a layout and a specification, which we prepare free of charge.

What moves the price

Cabinet count, not room size

Price follows the number and type of cabinets. Two kitchens in identical rooms can differ by thousands depending on how many tall units, drawer banks and islands are specified.

Price group of the door

German ranges are grouped by front. On Impuls, the same layout in PG01 and PG04 can differ substantially, which is why we quote by range as well as by layout.

Worktop material

Laminate, then quartz such as Silestone, then sintered surfaces such as Dekton. Worktops are often the single biggest jump between a mid and high quote.

Appliances

An AEG package, a Quooker boiling tap and a Blanco sink can be specified up or down without changing the cabinetry price.

Building work

Removing a wall, moving plumbing, rewiring or replastering is real work with real cost. We carry it out ourselves and price it in, rather than leaving it out of the quote.

Supply only or fully fitted

We do both. Supply-only removes the installation labour from the quote; fully fitted keeps one team responsible for the entire job.

Kitchen prices in Scotland by size

Cabinet count is a better guide than floor area. These are the ranges we see most often across Edinburgh, Glasgow, Fife, Perthshire, the Borders, Aberdeenshire and the Highlands.

Large kitchen with island (16-22 units)£22,000 - £38,000£34,000 - £58,000

What our quotes include

  • Full CAD design and as many revisions as it takes to get the layout right
  • A measured survey before anything is ordered, so sizes are checked on site
  • Cabinetry, fronts, handles, internal storage and cabinet lighting as specified
  • Worktops templated and fitted by our own fabricator partners
  • Delivery to your home anywhere in mainland Scotland, including the Highlands
  • Installation by our own joiners, with a 5-year guarantee on the work

What sits outside a quote

  • Appliances you choose to buy elsewhere
  • Structural work needing a building warrant or structural engineer
  • Gas work outside the scope of the appointed Gas Safe engineer
  • Skip hire and disposal where you would rather arrange it yourself
  • Decorating beyond making good and finishing around the new kitchen

We also carry out electrical, plumbing, plastering, flooring and painting work in house, so these can be priced into the same quote rather than chased as separate trade bills. See how we work.

Six ways to reduce the cost without cheapening the kitchen

Drop a price group, not a layout

Moving an Impuls kitchen from PG04 to PG02 keeps the same carcases, drawers and runners while cutting several thousand from the front cost. It is the single most effective saving available.

Mix worktop materials

Put sintered stone or quartz on the island where people gather, and a compact or laminate surface on the run behind. The room still reads as premium and the worktop bill drops sharply.

Keep the services where they are

Moving a sink, soil stack or gas run is the expensive kind of change. A layout that respects the existing services can save thousands in plumbing and making good.

Phase the extras

Boot rooms, larders, bar areas and boiling taps can be designed in now and added later. We plan the electrics and plumbing so nothing needs opening up twice.

Choose supply only if you have a trusted joiner

We supply cabinetry, worktops and appliances on their own at dealership prices. You keep the German product and take on the labour yourself.

Specify appliances to use, not to impress

An AEG package covers the vast majority of family cooking. Spending the difference on drawer internals and lighting usually improves daily life more.

Does the price change where you live in Scotland?

The cabinetry costs the same wherever you are. What varies is access, delivery distance and the condition of the property. A Georgian tenement in Edinburgh with lath and plaster walls and a stair carry needs more preparation than a new build in Midlothian. A Highland project may involve a longer delivery run and a tighter installation window, which we allow for at quote stage rather than discovering later.

We design, supply and install across all of mainland Scotland from our Edinburgh showroom at 24 Dalziel Place, EH7 5TP, and there is no separate travel charge inside our core coverage.

Kitchen pricing terms explained

Carcase
The cabinet box itself. German carcases arrive rigid-built to tight tolerances, which is why doors line up years later.
Price group
The band a door front sits in. Impuls runs PG01 to PG04; the layout stays the same while the front moves the price.
Handleless
A grip rail or recessed profile instead of handles. Available across most Impuls ranges at a modest premium.
In-frame
Doors set inside a visible timber frame - the traditional British construction we build by hand in Edinburgh.
Sintered stone
Ultra-compact surfaces such as Dekton: heat, scratch and UV resistant, and suitable for very large island spans.
Supply only
We provide the kitchen, worktops and appliances; your own joiner installs it.

Common questions

How much should I budget for a new kitchen in Scotland?
Most fully fitted kitchens we complete in Scotland land between £20,000 and £55,000, depending on cabinet count, door price group, worktop and appliances. Smaller supply-only German kitchens can start below £20,000, and fully hand-built bespoke projects typically start around £55,000.
Is a German kitchen cheaper than a handmade one?
Usually yes. German kitchens like Impuls are made on precision production lines, so a comparable layout costs less than cabinetry hand-built to measure in our Edinburgh joinery. Handmade suits period rooms, awkward spaces and furniture-style detail.
Does the quote include fitting?
It depends which you ask for. We quote supply only, or fully fitted with our own team covering carpentry, electrics, plastering and building work. Both are priced clearly, with no separate trade bills to chase.
How long does a new kitchen take?
Typical lead time from order to delivery is 5-6 weeks, with most installations completed inside one to two weeks on site depending on the amount of building work involved.
How much does a kitchen cost in Edinburgh?
Edinburgh projects sit in the same bands as the rest of Scotland, typically £20,000 to £45,000 fully fitted. Tenement and period properties often need additional plastering, levelling and electrical work, which we price into the quote rather than adding later.
How much of the budget should go on worktops?
As a rough guide, 10 to 20 per cent. Laminate keeps it at the low end, quartz such as Silestone sits in the middle, and sintered stone such as Dekton on a large island takes it to the top of that range.
Do you charge for design and quotes?
No. Design, CAD layouts, revisions and quotes are free, whether you visit the showroom or send plans by email. You only commit once the survey confirms the design and you are happy with the price.
Can I pay in stages?
Yes. Payment is staged around the order, delivery and completion, so you are never paying for work that has not happened. Everything is set out in writing before you commit.
Is it cheaper to buy a kitchen supply only?
The kitchen itself costs the same; you save the installation labour and take on the risk of coordinating trades. It suits clients with a trusted joiner already lined up.
Can you quote from my plans?
Yes. Send architect drawings, a floor plan or even measured sketches through our enquiry form and we will quote from them for free, then confirm everything with a survey before anything is ordered.
