A lot of local kitchens are long and narrow with a door at each end. The fix is rarely more cupboards, it is better ones: full extension pan drawers instead of base units, a tall larder rather than shallow wall cupboards, and a worktop run that leaves genuine space beside the hob and sink.
German cabinetry is well suited to this because the internal fittings are engineered rather than improvised, and drawer boxes are rated to carry real weight.
